Italica (Seville, Spain): use of local marble in Augustan age
2010
This study concerns 51 marble finds made of “Cipollino verde” coming from the ancient city of Italica (north of the modern city of Santiponce, 9 km NW of Seville, Spain), the earliest Roman settlement in Spain, founded in 206 B.C. The aim of this work was to determine their provenance from Greek and Italian quarries or from local quarries worked in the Iberian Peninsula. Thin-section optical microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, bulk rock chemistry and O, C and Sr stable isotope analyses were carried out. Results were compared with literature data on “Cipollino verde” marbles quarried in southern Euboea (Greece), Apuan Alps (Italy), Almería, Extremoz, Seville (Spain) and Évora (Portugal). T…
Haemorheological components in the pre-geriatric and geriatric age range in a randomly selected Western Sicily population sample (Casteldaccia study)
1993
{Received 24.8.1992; accepted 7.12.1992} On a randomly selected western Sicily population sample (Casteldac cia Study: 600 subjects; 300 males and 300 females) of an age range from 40 to 79 years, were determined: Haematocrit (Htc) , blood vi scosity, plasma viscosity, filterability of whole blood and fibrinogen. Par ticipation was 97%, being 582 subjects (M = 287, F = 295). All the parameters measured showed a progressive increase with age and si gnificant differences were found between male and female subjects: Htc and blood viscosity were higher in male subjects (p < 0.01), while plasma viscosity, whole blood filterability and fibrinogen were higher in female subjects (p < 0.05). On the empirical spectral distribution for certain models related to sample covariance matrices with different correlations
2021
Given [Formula: see text], we study two classes of large random matrices of the form [Formula: see text] where for every [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] are iid copies of a random variable [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] are two (not necessarily independent) sets of independent random vectors having different covariance matrices and generating well concentrated bilinear forms. We consider two main asymptotic regimes as [Formula: see text]: a standard one, where [Formula: see text], and a slightly modified one, where [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] while [Formula: see text] for some [Formula: see text]. Assuming that vectors [Formula: see t…
A tandem-flow assembly for the chemiluminometric determination of hydroquinone
2003
A direct chemiluminescent procedure for determination of hydroquinone based on the emergent flow methodology known as multicommutation or tandem-flow is presented for first time. The manifold was based on a set of three channels and three solenoid valves; and, the determination was performed at 60degreesC and at flow-rate of 7.5 ml min(-1). The complete cycle lasted 35 s, which resulted in a sample flow trough of 103 h(-1). The chemical process was the hydroquinone oxidation with the system sulphuric acid-potassium permanganate; and the light emission was clearly enhanced by the presence of quinine sulphate and benzalkonium chloride reaching a detection limit of 30 Rg l(-1). The dynamic int…
National level wealth inequality and socioeconomic inequality in adolescent mental wellbeing
2020
Abstract Background Previous research established a positive association between national income inequality and socioeconomic inequalities in adolescent health, but little is known about the extent to which national level inequalities in accumulated financial resources (i.e. wealth) are associated with these health inequalities. Therefore, we examined the association between national wealth inequality and income inequality and socioeconomic inequalities in adolescent mental wellbeing. Methods Data were from 17 countries participating in three successive waves (2010, 2014 and 2018) of the cross-sectional Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) study. We combined individual-level data…
Funcionamiento ejecutivo y rendimiento matemático: un estudio longitudinal
2016
Unveiling the environment and faint features of the isolated galaxy CIG 96 with deep optical and HI observations
2018
Context. Asymmetries in atomic hydrogen (HI) in galaxies are often caused by the interaction with close companions, making isolated galaxies an ideal framework to study secular evolution. The AMIGA project has demonstrated that isolated galaxies show the lowest level of asymmetry in their HI integrated profiles compared to even field galaxies, yet some present significant asymmetries. CIG 96 (NGC 864) is a representative case reaching a 16% level. Aims. Our aim is to investigate the HI asymmetries of the spiral galaxy CIG 96 and what processes have triggered the star-forming regions observed in the XUV pseudo-ring. Methods. We performed deep optical observations at CAHA1.23m, CAHA2.2m and V…
Emotional Self-Regulation Therapy: A New and Efficacious Treatment for Smoking
1997
Abstract We describe emotional self-regulation therapy, a recently-developed suggestion technique for the treatment of smoking, and present data attesting to its efficacy. Of the 38 individuals who completed treatment, 82% (47% of the initial sample) stopped smoking altogether and 13% (8%of the initial sample) reduced their smoking. A follow-up at 6 months showed that 66% (38% of the initial sample) of those who had completed the treatment remained abstinent and reported minimal withdrawal symptoms or weight gain. In a no-treatment comparison group, only 8% reduced their smoking or became abstinent.
Revenue models, in-app purchase, and the app performance: Evidence from Apple's App Store and Google Play
2016
The effect of revenue models on app performance depends on the app store. The effect of in-app purchase on app performance depends on the app store.Paid, freemium and in-purchase models are shown to be effective in app store.Freemium and in-app purchase models are shown to be less effective in Google Play.App category influences the effects of both revenue models and in-app purchase. In this paper, we empirically examine how the revenue model (paid, free, or freemium) adopted for a given app affects the app revenue performance as measured by the app daily revenue rank. We also study the impact of in-app purchase on this measure of performance. Moreover, we study how such relationships are co…
Feasibility of shotgun urinary proteomics for investigating prematurely born preschoolers (PBP)
2016
Background: Preterms and twins are at higher risk of respiratory morbidity later in life. Advances in proteomic approaches may allow the characterization of biomarkers involved in respiratory diseases (Mauri et al. Imm. Lett. 2014;162:2-10). Gel-free approach quantitatively identify differentially expressed proteins in relation to physiopathological conditions (Mauri&Dehò, Meth Enzymology 2008;447:99-117). This can improve the clinical reliability of the next generation of biomarkers to discriminate multiple phenotypes of childhood respiratory diseases. Aim: To assess the ability of gel-free proteomics for identifying specific protein profiles related to PBP. Methods: Urine samples were…
